"HISPANIOLAE, CUBAE, ALIARUMQUE, INSULARUM CIRCUMIACIENTIUM, DELINEATIO" & "CULIACANAE, AMERICAE REGIONIS, DESCRIPTIO"
Here
is an original, historic, and excellent condition hand tinted map
printed in 1579 by the famous 16th century mapmaker ABRAHAM ORTELIUS of
the Spanish Main. Two great early maps of important regions in the New
World are combined into this interesting composition, notably of the
gold rich Caribbean, plus the rich silver mining district of the
Pacific West Culiacan area of Mexico. At the time this map was printed,
during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and her infamous privateer-pirates,
copies of this map were of great interest to, and used by, the Real
Pirates of the Caribbean and Pacific coast of the late 16th and 17th
century...
Measurements:Nicely framed and glazed by a professional art gallery in a 24.5" x 19.5" antiqued frame.
Condition:
This 436 year old, original 1579 Map is in exceptionally good
condition, with evidence of a vertical fold in the middle and small
traces of minor staining. If you are interested in historic maps, or in
plundering the Spanish Main for gold or silver, this is just the right
map for you.
Abraham Ortelius was a resident of Antwerp,
Belgium, and was appointed in 1575 as Geographer to Philip II of Spain,
where he gained access to the rich areas of the Spanish Empire. . He
was one of the foremost mapmakers of his time. With the success of Sir
Francis Drake's Panama isthmus raid of 1577, and Drake's capture of
Spanish treasure ships in his Pacific coast raids of 1578, Ortelius
obviously had turned against King Phillip, his former employer, to
create this map of the especially rich areas of the Spanish empire.
Copies of this map were in high demand, and were a "Must Have" map for
all would-be English, Dutch, and French privateers and pirates.
