Ben E. Neill (1915 - 2001) listed South Shore, Cape Cod artist signed lower left.  This piece is oil on board and measures 19 1/2" by 15" and framed 26 1/2" by 22".  The painting is in excellent  condition and is as found in estate.  The painting is of waves crashing against rocks and seems to be an approaching storm in the distance.

Mr. Neill was born and raised in Quincy MA, graduating from Quincy High School where he was a track star. He studied in Boston art schools including the Massachusetts College of Art and worked as a commercial artist for a decade, focusing on men's fashion. He then worked at the former Boston Herald Traveler as a staff artist for the next 30 years.

After the newspaper folded, Mr. Neill focused his painting on marine subjects, particularly the fishing schooners and sailing vessels that plied the waters of the New England coast. His inspiration came from spending most of his life overlooking Quincy & Cape Cod Bays, as he moved to Braintree in 1949 and to Sandwich in 1969.
He was featured in several marine art exhibitions, his paintings hang in several galleries throughout the country his work appears in books on marine art. He was an elected member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the International Society of Marine Painters.

Mr. Neill spent much of his leisure time researching the histor details of the vessels he painted. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and walking his dogs along the beach and marsh in front of his home.
