Art Deco Bronzed Spelter Pheasant
by Salvatore Melani
Circa 1930

Beautiful bronzed pheasant set on an elegant black marble base, dating from the Art Deco period. The pheasant is of exceptional quality and has been very skilfully made. I believe he is made of spelter which has been bronzed and then painted to highlight the feathers and other such details. From the way he is set to the bevelled edge of the marble he oozes quality and excellent craftsmanship. He is incredibly heavy - weighing over 11kg.

He is signed on the end of his tail "S. MELANi"  and also again on the marble base.

Approximate Measurements :
Base : 21 1/2" long by 6 1/2" wide by 1" thick
Length of Pheasant : 20" (51cm)
Height of Pheasant : 9" (23cm)

He is in excellent condition for his age. He has a nice patina and the paintwork is clear and bright. There are a few very small nibbles around the edges of the marble base (one particular corner I have photographed) and some light surface scratches. There is nothing major or that detracts from his overall appeal and he certainly displays beautifully.
