This is an original oil-on-tile painting of a winter scene signed “n. Apol”. This is short for "naar Apol" a Dutch art term meaning "after Apol" or "in the style of Apol".

Louis Apol was a popular Dutch artist (1850-1936) who specialized in winterscapes and landscapes (more information below). His work was so popular that many artists painted in his style, thus the signature, "naar Apol".

This 4 5/8" x 6 7/8" (about 12 x 17.5 cm) ceramic tile is set in a 11 3/8" x 9 3/8" (about 29 x 23.5 cm) wood frame and probably dates from the early 1900’s, although it cannot be dated exactly. This is a typical Apol-type scene with the snowy river bank, bare trees and barn-like structure as the focus with a windmill and other structures in the background. There are skaters on the iced-over river and what looks like the figure of an old woman walking along the bank. The actual artist is not known.

The painting was recently cleaned and restored by professional art conservator Katya Dovgan and appraised at $1200 by Lyndi McNulty (Washington D.C. and Baltimore, MD art appraiser for 35 years, lecturer at the Smithsonian Institution). I'm selling it for less because I need to downsize.

This piece of art was purchased at an art show in Germany in 1990.

Vorming

Louis Apol was leerling van onder anderen J.F. Hoppenbrouwers en Pieter Stortenbeker aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (1867-1872). In 1871 ontving hij de Koninklijke Subsidie voor de Schilderkunst en in 1874 een zilveren medaille op een tentoonstelling te Amsterdam. In 1880 voer hij mee op een expeditie van de schoener Willem Barents^[1] naar Nova Zembla. De vele indrukken en schetsen van deze reis boden hem de rest van zijn leven veel stof voor zijn werken.

Oeuvre

Apol is vooral bekend door zijn winterlandschappen. Daarin spelen mensen een ondergeschikte rol. Werk van Apol is onder andere te vinden in het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam en in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
