2001 Britannia Silver Proof Set |
The Britannia gold & silver coins were first introduced in 1997 , the silver coins had a purity of .958 also called 'Britannia silver' , this new silver standard was introduced by parliament in 1697 . Britannia was the ancient Roman name for Great Britain , often depicted as a helmeted female warrior . Britannia survived & became popular as a representation of Great Britain . The image was first used on a farthing coin dated 1672 , It has since been used widely on a variety of denominations . The silver Britannia's have a different design every year , the 2001 coin shows Britannia standing alongside a powerful lion , the design is similar to 'Una & the Lion' used on an 1839 £5 Gold coin . The obverse has a bust of Queen Elizabeth II . This silver proof set has all four of the different denominations , the coins are the 1oz , 1/2 oz , 1/4 oz & the 1/10 oz , all have the same 'Una & the lion' design . Proofs are minted using highly polished dies & blanks , this gives the coins extra fine detail & a mirror like sheen , far superior to the normal circulation coinage . The coin is housed in the original Royal Mint case of issue , complete with a certificate of authenticity . There is a little wear & tarnishing to the clasp on the case , the coins are mint . …………… specifications 1oz Britannia : weight~31.21gms diameter~38.61mm metal~Britannia silver (.958) mintage~4,596 four coin sets …………… Postage combined with all other items Please wait for an invoice for multiple buys Please feel free to ask any questions Click HERE to see my other items Click HERE to add me to your favourites list
