When
Sky High and Jet Sled (Sky High is the pilot and Jet Sled is the
vehicle, just in case someone wasn't sure) were revealed at this
year's SDCC, it certainly took almost everyone by surprise and was
met with almost universal praise. Not only did we have another
vehicle in the line (something Mattel more or less said was very
highly unlikely after the sales of the Wind Raider didn't meet their
expectations) but we FINALLY got a figure of the vintage Wind Raider
model kit pilot (the other model kit pilots were released as the
Fighting Foe Men), a design fans have been clamoring for for years.
First off, let's talk about the vehicle. The Jet Sled (or Sky Sled as
some insist; ) is a nice little vehicle that will accommodate most
standard sized MOTUC figures. While Granamyr won't be riding this
thing any time soon (obviously), Teela, Icarius or even Skeletor will
have no problem.
This vehicle, while modified, is a great replica of
its original counterpart (those of you who had a Battle Ram back in
the day will find this Jet Sled to be very familiar). The
gargoyle/dragon piece on the front looks fantastic and the stickers
on the sides more or less scream vintage. There are actually some
very detailed controls and stuff at the pilot's station; but my
personal favorite touches are the ridged traction grip plates on the
foot panels. That little detail could have been simply a sticker
(like the vintage Battle Ram) or nothing there at all, but that's not
the case and the vehicle looks better for it. While some collectors
and fans have voiced their opinion that the vehicle should have been
sold separately or in a two-pack of two vehicles, I for one love the
figure/vehicle combo.
As for Sky High himself, I love this figure. His helmet/headsculpt looks great; looking like a cross between a Knight Templar and Space Ghost, fitting in with both the fantasy and sci-fi angles of Masters of the Universe. His blue, black and red body looks great and I love his breastplate with the red symbol on the front. He also comes with a double-bladed fin/wing that can be placed on his back or wielded as a weapon. The wing stands out in this set as it is a nod to the Wind Raider. But what I love the most about this figure is his anonymity. Sure, the bio on the back of the package gives him a name and a couple of brief details, but we don't have to pay attention to this at all. With his nondescript, uniform-looking appearance and concealed identity, he doesn't have to be a Jet Sled or Wind Raider Pilot. Instead he could be the evil leader of the Fighting Foe Men (to go along with the other model kit pilots) or he could be some type of rogue bounty hunter or a space gladiator or a Galactic Protector or any darn thing you please. He can have any type of personality and look like almost anything under that helmet, it's all up to you and that's the beauty of it. Now, no matter if you buy this set for the vehicle, the figure or a little of both, pick it up if you can. It's not a set to be missed.
