Bank of Canada issues banknotes circulating in Canada since 1935.

MONETORY SYSTEM : 1 dollar = 100 cents

PRINTER : Two printers produce Canadian banknotes.
||||| British American Bank Note Company(BABNC or BABN)
||||| Canadian Bank Note Company(CBNC or CBN)

IMPRINT : Imprint found at lower center on face until series 1954. No imprint since series 1967.
Series 1967 fraction style prefix : The lower letter. "P" or "M" for BABNC and "O" for CBNC.
Series 1979 no letter : Second digit from the left indicates printer; "6" for BABNC and "0" or "2" for CBNC.
Two letter prefix : BABNC printed $2 and $100 notes. CBNC printed $5; $10; $20 and $50 notes. Both companies printed $1 note with no indications.
Three letter prefix : The first letter indicates printer: "A" "B" "C" for BABNC or BAI and "E" "F" "G" "H" for CBNC.

PREFIX : Prefix read from left to right followed by 7 digits.
Letters represent printers are reserved and limited.
Letters indicate denominations are assigned, and can not be used on different denominations.
Letters for series include from A to Z except "I" "O" "Q" to avoid mis-read as numbers. In 3 letter prefix system, letter "X" reserved for replacement note, "I" and "O" may included or skipped.
Fraction style prefix : Upper letter indicates series. Lower letter indicates denomination.(except series 1967)
2 letter prefix : First letter indicates denomination. Second letter indicates series.
3 letter prefix : First letter represents printer. Second letter indicates denomination. Third letter indicates series.
--Note : This is a brief information about prefix system from Bank of Canada, however, Bank of Canada can break the rules for some reasons, and it happened a few times in the past.--

REPLACEMENT NOTE :
Fraction style prefix : An asterisk( * ) to the left.
2 letter prefix : Prefix begins with an asterisk( * )
No letter : Number "1" in the second digit from the left.(Series 1979 only.)
3 letter prefix : Letter X in the third letter(The letter before serial numbers.)
Insert note : Identifiable replacement notes discontinued in late 1990s.
Instead, a certain ranges of  prefixes inserted to new bricks as replacement notes.
--Note : Be aware that letter X found on fraction style and 2 letter prefixes are not replacement notes.--
