In view is a used Canon FD 300mm f/2.8L Telephoto Lens kit in excellent optical condition. Debuting in 1981, the FD 300mm f/2.8L was the first Canon 300mm lens to use a fluorite glass element in it’s optical construction. Used in conjunction with a UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) element, this optical formula eliminates color fringing at subject edges, producing enhanced image sharpness and contrast. This example is of the later version with black mount block, rather than the original chrome. The 300mm f/2.8L has always been considered to be a lens of superb quality. The ultra-wide f/2.8 maximum aperture will produce magnificent bokeh, separating subject from background for superior separation.

“This is a large aperture high performance telephoto lens, which is newly designed and different from earlier FD300mm f/2.8 lens. Artificial crystal fluorite is used for the second lens element and UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass is used for the third lens element. They minimize secondary spectrum to eliminate color fringes, appearing at the edges of subjects. The superb image quality of this lens is highly evaluated as the best quality of any telephoto lenses by many professional photographers.”
This lens is ready to move ahead in the digital era. It’s cosmetics are of use and shows marks in the lens barrel and some visible paint loss. The optics are free from abrasions in the glass and front element’s coating appears to be unmarked. Filters are of the drop-in type. Included is the original Canon 48mm 1x clear filter. Any 48mm threaded filter will fit into the drop-in filter holder. The built-in lens hood has a slight dent in the leading edge that does not prevent the lens hood extension from attaching firmly or remaining in place. The rotating tripod mount is adjusted using a silver button on the rotating ring. Pressing the button allows the lens to be positioned in any of four (4) detented positions at 90º intervals. The original rear lens cap and soft front lens cap are included in the sale. The lens hood extension can be reverse fitted for storage. The soft lens cap fits over this configuration. Everything fits snuggly inside the original Canon hard case.
The Canon FD 300mm f/2.8L is the perfect shooters lens. It’s perfect for sports, birding, general photography and videography where it’s shallow depth of field will separate the subject from a beautifully blurred background to produce perfect imagery. The entire kit weighs in at just under 7lb/3.2kg, so packing it around won’t be a problem. For the APS-C sensor the focal length runs out to 450-480mm; for others it’s longer still! Adapters for all type of digital cameras, still or video, are readily available from vendors globally. Looks like there’s long, fast glass in your future…
