A some history:
The art of mosaic, ie, the original mosaic work done with small pieces of enamel,
glass or stones of various colors contracts with stucco. It was begun by the ancient
Egyptians developed the first century a.c. in Rome and had great splendor during the
Renaissance. At that time Florence had its own school of Mosaic, recognized and
supported by the Medici, fans to his art.
The city of Leonardo and Michelangelo completely renewed the Mosaic: no longer commissions of small pieces, of various kinds and colors, to represent drawings and
figures, but assemblages of natural semi-precious stone, consisting of elements shaped
according to a precise plan: based on color and veins impressed by nature, forming a
pictorial composition plane.
Thus was born the Florentine Mosaic or Painting of Stone.
The beautiful and fascinating results are now visible at major art museums of the world,
with an interlude sull'Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
This art painful and difficult feature of Medicean Florence, then experienced a
long period of neglect, so that very few had the courage and perseverance, together
with the necessary artistic skills, to continue it.
