SUPERB ANTIQUE JAPANESE CHOSEN KARATSU STONEWARE VASE

Stunning Japanese stoneware tea ceremony vase representing the epitome of the Japanese tea aesthetic. Magnificent presence, exhibiting a bold, yet subtle strength. The colors in the glaze on this piece are absolutely gorgeous. Turquoise greens, tropical sea blues, and golden ambers, all melding together harmoniously.

Recently purchased in Japan from an exquisite collection of tea ceremony articles, this piece is a rare example of Chosen Karatsu ware, highly prized by tea masters. Organic drip glazing is found around the upper section of the pot caused by the heat of the kiln as it drips down the sides forming natural swirls and intricate color blending. This is one of the most beautiful examples that we have ever seen.

The sides of the vase are further embellished with basket-like impressed patterning which adds additional texture and interest. Feels wonderful in the hand. The sides display two small handles, in naturalist bamboo form. This stoneware tokonoma vase is exceptionally magnificent and artistic, exhibiting a subtle crazing and patina. It measures approximately 9 1/2" tall and 9" wide, and is in excellent antique condition. We note that there are glaze bubbles from the time of firing that have popped adding further interest and texture. Signed on the underside with an impressed mark within the hand cut swirled foot. Originally created in the late 1800s to early 1900s for use in the tea ceremony, this superb vase is a beautiful example of Japanese life and expression. Would make an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of world class Japanese antiques and tea ceremony accoutrements.

Wabi-sabi is the quintessential Japanese aesthetic. It is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional... It is also two separate words, with related but different meanings. "Wabi" is the kind of perfect beauty that is seemingly-paradoxically caused by just the right kind of imperfection, such as an asymmetry in a ceramic bowl which reflects the handmade craftsmanship, as opposed to another bowl which is perfect, but soul-less and machine-made. "Sabi" is the kind of beauty that can come only with age, such as chips, wear, or the subtle antique patina. It can also refer to quirks and anomalies arising from the process of construction, which add uniqueness and elegance to the object. Sabi is beauty or serenity that comes with age, when the life of the object and its impermanence are evidenced in its patina and wear, or in any visible repairs. In one sense wabi-sabi is a training whereby the student of wabi-sabi learns to find the most simple objects interesting, fascinating and beautiful. Fading autumn leaves would be an example. Wabi-sabi can change our perception of the world to the extent that a chip or crack in a vase makes it more interesting and gives the object greater meditative value. Similarly materials that age such as bare wood, paper and fabric become more interesting as they exhibit changes that can be observed over time.
