Sphinx jewellery is a collectable vintage British UK Jewellery brand. The company was started in the late 1940′s by S Root and was based in Chiswick, London. They were known for their beautifully designed and constructed statement costume jewellery pieces , producing a wide spectrum of styles and designs. In addition to their own lines, they created designs for many artists like Kenneth Jay Lane, Nina Ricci, Alfred Phillipe for Trifari, Jo Mazer (Jomaz), Butler & Wilson, Caura, Fred Paris and Saks 5th Avenue, Marks & Spencer and a number of other high end stores in both Europe and America. Sphinx jewellery can be identified by having the name Sphinx stamped in an oval cartouche often accompanied by a design code stamp of a letter and numbers. ( Some jewellery has only a design stamp ) They made a wide range of vintage jewellery including stunning statement necklaces, large animal brooches, chunky art glass brooches, some modernist style brooches, as well as earrings, bracelets and rings. The sphinx brand finished producing jewellery in the late 1990's. and their pieces have become increasingly sought after collectors pieces.
