In 2013 I saw a stunning photo of a fantastic feldspar called Rainbow Lattice Sunstone. The picture quickly went viral, and the internet hype was so strong that I decided to pursue the elusive material. I got in touch with a close friend who is an avid prospector in Australia and told him that the excitement for the material was high and that he MUST pursue it for me. A year later I had in my possession the first parcel of RLS rough to surface on the market in 30 years! The deposit is quite limited, with only a small percentage of lattice showing color, due to the cracking of the stone in the earth that led to an oxidation process that brought color to the Hematite and Ilmenite inside. One of my favorite effects of this fascinating feldspar is the moonstone effect, where a silver sheen appears from one direction while the lattice appears from another angle. The rough requires skilled lapidation to bring out the amazing effects. We now have a good supply of stock available for purchase.
One of the more untapped countries for specimen collecting, Australia has a wealth of minerals to offer. The country is so big and so remote that prospecting is not the cheapest or easiest endeavor. Often times just to get to the mining areas from the highly populated east coast, drives of over 2000km one-way are required! Western Australia boasts the country's largest industrial mineralization. It is perhaps the most remote place on earth and that makes specimen mining there somewhat prohibitive. We do see stones come to market occasionally though. More rough than specimen.
