About Feather Dusters

“Feather Dusters don’t work, they just scatter the dust around”. How many times have you heard this statement? Well I’ve heard this plenty, over the past 20 years, in teaching the art of cleaning maintenance to others.

I would have to say, often the person making the statement just might be right, here is why. Most people buy a new feather duster, where its working great for a while. Yet after using it for over the course of a few weeks, It’s just not working as it first did.  Here’s why!

It’s not working as it did when it was new, because one has not perform the necessary feather duster maintenance.

Feather Duster Maintenance

1: Shaking the dust from your duster, by running duster back and forth, across your opened hand; gently tapping the top of the wooden handle upon the base of the palm (to be done outdoors). Perform this maintenance after every use, it only takes less than 30 seconds; if you have a large multiple dusting areas, you might want to perform this step half way through, and then again at the end.

 2: Ostrich feathers have to be washed, to maintain their ability to hold dust, in warm soapy water. Fill your sink with warm water, adding a few drops of dish washing liquid like Dawn, to the water, drop in your feather duster.  Allow it to soak for about 5 to 10 minutes max.  Grab the wooden handle and move feather duster, back and forth through the water, at the same time move your hand gently across the feathers. Remove from the water, and gently squeeze the excess water from the duster. Refill the sink and rinse duster, until you are sure you have removed all the soap. Once again squeeze gently to remove excess water. Now here is the key, you can hang your wet duster by the handle with the feathers facing downward, for a more streamline duster once it has dried.  Best however, is to support the wet duster with the feathers facing upward, which will often give you a fuller wider duster once it has dried thoroughly.  Be sure feather duster is not leaning against anything while drying, in either position; as to allow the air to move through the feathers freely…a cleaned  gal milk or water jug,  works great for this purpose. Once thoroughly dry, overnight is the best, take your duster and once again move it back and forth across your open hand to fluff feathers.

3. Plastic feather cover: The plastic cover should not be removed, just pull it up when in use, and back down when being stored. This cover is there as a protection for the ostrich feathers.
