Antique Brass Field Microscope

Good example of a high quality 19th Century microscope in a fitted wooden case, complete with 3 objective lenses and an eyepiece lens. The microscope itself is made of brass and is a typical upright design with a tubular body. The eyepiece tube can be manually adjusted to provide the coarse focus. It has a circular brass stage and a mirror below to direct the light. There are no maker's details anywhere on the microscope.

There are 3 threaded brass objective lenses, numbered 1,2 and 3. There is an eyepiece lens in built into the tube and it also comes with a further brass lens and a screw case which could be for viewing live or liquid substances. The microscope comes in it a fitted wooden box with velvet lining and sections for the eyepiece lenses to fit in.

The microscope appears to be in working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I'm sure the lenses would probably benefit from a clean but they produced a clear image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus. The glass in lenses 1 and 2 rattle when shaken and 3 appears to be missing an internal lens. 

The microscope measures approximately 8" tall. The box is 8" long X 2 1/2" wide X 3" deep.

Overall the microscope is in good condition for its age and displays very nicely. It has been used and will have normal signs of wear. The brass is tarnished and the lacquer has worn in places and there is a minor stress crack in the brass tube (see photo) and some marks around the end of the tube but it hasn't affected the workings of the microscope. The box is sturdy with a nice aged patina and no major damage. Although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than an accurate scientific instrument.
