General information about Dragon Fruit

Vine-like epiphytic pitaya-producing cacti of the genus Hylocereus. It Blooms only at night; the large white fragrant flowers of the typical cactus flower shape are among those called "moonflower" or "Queen of the Night". Sweet pitayas have a creamy pulp and a delicate aroma. It is also grown as an Ornamental plant, used in gardens as a flowering vine, and a house plant indoors.

Amazing HUGE fragrant flower that you have to see when it blooms around mid-night !

Even though this is a cactus type plant, It does not do well in direct full sun. It may burn. Because this cactus is a climber and will be heavy, give it a strong sturdy trellis to climb on or under a tree.  It can also be grown indoors. Tips: Make sure you have good soil mixture soil & sand.   Careful not to over water or under water.  Give it some palm fertilizer  every 3 months.

Once the plant reaches a mature 10 lbs weight, you may see the plant flower.

Pitaya cacti flower overnight, usually wilting by the morning. Non-self pollinating variety rely on nocturnal creatures such as bats or moths for fertilization by other pitaya. This limits the capability of home growers to produce the fruit. Self-pollinating varieties are highly desired due to this. The plants can flower between three and six times in a year depending especially on growing conditions.  The plants handles up to 40 °C (104F) and very short periods of frost, but does not survive long exposure to freezing temperatures. The cacti thrive most in USDA zones 10-11, but may survive outdoors in zone 9a or 9b. Hylocereus has adapted to live in dry tropical climates with a moderate amount of rain. The dragon fruit sets on the cactus-like trees 30–50 days after flowering and can sometimes have 5-6 cycles of harvests per year.

Suggestions for growing Dragon Fruit

Cutting ends should be allowed to cure/air dry for at least 4-7 days before planting. This prevents the cut ends from infection. Dip the end in rooting hormone and place in very well draining soil that is slightly damp about 3 inches deep. Water just once a week if soil is too dry. Rooting usually takes 3-6 weeks. This plant is easy to root. A fast grower once rooting begins. Make sure you have a strong support for it to climb on. Enjoy & Good Luck!

For newly planted dragon fruit:

  • Then apply 4 ounces of a fertilizer such as 6-6-6 or 8-3-9 every two months from the time growth starts in early spring to early fall.
  • When growth stops for the winter. Scatter the fertilizer evenly around the plant, from about 3 inches away from the stem to about 12 inches away from the plant. Water it in thoroughly.
  • Summer application of 4 pounds of well-decomposed manure or compost per plant, keeping it from touching the plant's stem.

1 year old Plant:

  • When the plant's roots have become established and are more efficient to absorb the nutrients from the soil.  Apply 5 to 6 ounces of the fertilizer every two months in a wider diameter around the plant and increase the amount of manure or compost added to the top of the soil to 6 pounds.

For dragon fruit plants four years old or more:

  • make three to four fertilizer applications spread evenly through the growing season of 8 to 12 ounces each. Apply manure or compost twice, once in the spring and once in mid-summer, using about 5 pounds each time.

About Me:  My favorite childhood memory was etched in Sumatra, Indonesia by the ocean waves at a very young age. Java is a mystical place and one can easily get captivated by it's mystery, beauty & diversity of life. Lucky for me my father worked there and so most of my childhood was spent overseas. I haven't returned since I was a kid, but it seems I'm constantly being drawn back to that feeling (Yes, I was spoiled by the Island). That's how I came up with the name Ramasiti. In Indonesian/Hindu folklore, it's a romantic tale of star crossed lovers, Rama & Sita.

My love for plants was sparked by my beautiful mother. She loved planting and she could make anything grow vivaciously green. I, on the other hand, had the opposite effect on plants. It wasn't until later; I learned to appreciate gardening and grew a green thumb.

I've been an Ebay member for 10 + years. I love plants. Especially rare & exotic ones. I personally grow and care for all of the plants here on my auctions. I am a Registered Florida Nursery and all of my plants have been inspected. I'm always on the look-out for more plants and eager to share thoughts about PLANTS! And so, it goes without saying, nature's influence is the key element to my collection of plants, art and photography. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Please feel free to contact me via Ebay.
