SYNOPSIS

The Fairytale Quest is a fantasy for children, a fairytale about fairytales. Toni doesn't believe in fairytales until a mean little man called Rumpelstiltskin tricks her into swapping her baby brother Brian for a unicorn. To get the baby back, Toni has to go with the unicorn to Fairyland, where all sorts of obstacles and dangers await. And, as the unicorn warns her, if she and Brian are still in Fairyland after sunset, they will have to stay there forever. In the end, like all the best children's stories, this one has a fairytale ending.

It is important that stories for kids are ones that adults can enjoy reading with them. Many kids' books nowadays are to do with things adults, particularly older ones, can't easily relate to. This modern fairytale offers common ground where today's fantasy loving children and adults brought up with classic fairytales can meet.

As well as helping children develop their imaginations, good fantasy stories can contribute to a child's understanding of the real world. The fairytale world and its stories for children can provide an interesting background against which to work out ideas of good and bad, sadness and happiness, and other important aspects of life. The child's realisation that the story is a fantasy allows a safe distance in which to examine these. The Fairytale Quest is one such children's story.

Reviews

WOW .... Wow. Let me say this: As a lifelong reader, finding those books that will completely transport me has been a steady, almost-involuntary ambition. The path is always interesting, but so often, the wonders & joys that we readers experience along the way, though largely pleasant, are short-lived and fleeting. Even so, the winding road is worth it, because you never truly know when following it will lead you to a book like The Fairytale Quest. It is a story of such unbridled magic that you are helplessly drawn right into the core of a story that crosses unbounded imagination.

It is a children's story, but like all true children's classics, even the most headstrong adult will fall in love on contact. Written in an active voice, the action starts on page one - vague, empty descriptions are spared. Every word propels the story forward, indulging readers with nuanced insight into characters that are immediately full-fleshed and jump right out from the pages. We are introduced to the innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences of our main character, Toni (a spunky but loving tomboy), and follow her adventures in being tricked to exchange her brother for a unicorn by the relentless (and delightfully naughty) Rumpelstiltskin. Along the way, Toni meets an array of lively characters that offer guidance, support, or even the occasional trickery. The author has drawn from our most beloved children's classics to breathe new life into their ongoing adventures: Prince Charming & Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk (now married to the unforgettable Millie), The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. We come to know Anders' original characters, like Oddi, whose sweetness warmed my heart from the beginning. We're put right in the story. We can see what they're seeing. We can imagine stepping on twigs and winding through the Wild Woods as if we were there. Intricately layered with depth of plot, character, and joie de vivre, the story is alive.

After reading a book, have you ever had the feeling that you'd just returned from the most unbelievable trip - one that you experienced alone, can hardly believe it's over, and wanting to share some of those memories with others? It doesn't happen that often; I wish it would happen more frequently. But that is what The Fairytale Quest gifted to me. In finishing this book, I was left with the feeling of a drawn-out, technicolor journey having come to its end, and an unimaginable sadness at having to part with Toni, Oddi, and all the delightful characters I had come to know so intimately. It is a feeling readers only experience when that book will remain with them forever.

Allie Anders has a devoted fan - and one who is breathlessly awaiting her next work

Brilliant   ...  When Toni's annoying baby brother gets kidnapped by Rumpelstiltzkin only she can save him by entering the fairy tale world. She encounters giants, witches, wizards, wolves and crazy Beautiful Baby Contests (why else would Rumpel want to steal a baby!) in a magical land of the fairy tales we know, and the ones that were never told.

A terrific adventure, perfectly crafted to be read to children at bed-time, and with lots for adults to enjoy too. Anybody who was ever a child will find this a thrilling adventure. If you enjoyed Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass and modern classics like the Princess Bride then this is the book for you. The perfect book to read to your children at bedtime - and they will always remember it.

MARVELLOUS    ...... An absolutely marvellous book. Even though I'm an "older" person for whom this book was written, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! It has adventure and a moral, without being overbearing or"preachy". Something I don't say very often, GOOD BOOK WITH A HAPPY ENDING !!!! Thank you for writing it.

A mix of In the Night Kitchen and Shrek  ...  I was thoroughly delighted with the story of tween Toni who accidentally trades her baby brother to Rumplelstiltskin while vacationing with her family in Kerry. A combination of a road film and a fairy tale, this tale was charming, funny, and sweet - with a suitable moral---all tied up in a pretty bow. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

loved this book  ...  I enjoyed this book very much, an interesting twist of the old fairy tales, there is a moral to the story which children will find easy to understand. Allies books draw me in from the beginning and keeps me entertained to the end.
