Robert Gregg Cherry (1891-1957) was born in York, S.C. but grew up in Gastonia, North Carolina.  He graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University) in 1912 and got his law degree there in 1914.  In WWI commanded a machine gun troop for the First North Carolina Cavalry.  After the war he returned to North Carolina only to discover he had been nominated for the Mayor of Gastonia.  He won the mayoral elections of that town in 1919 and 1921.  He was a member of the North Carolina House from 1931 to 1939 and represented Gaston County in the North Carolina Senate from 1941 to 1944.  He was a Democrat and was Governor of North Carolina during World War Two from 1945 to 1949.  His biggest achievements were in the realm of health care and education.  A man of simple means, he was known for his wit and for making his own calls and, eschewing the executive limousine, walking to work as Governor.
