The KZ1000 CSR was what we would now call a "power-cruiser" version of the famed KZ1000 - the first of the superbikes and the quickest/fastest street bike of the late-'70s/early '80s. One hundred HP and 140 mph were big news 30 years ago. The CSR model featured traditional spoked wheels with light aluminum alloy rims, triple disc brakes - but also some cruiser-esque touches such as the stepped seat and buckhorn handlebars. The bars on this bike have been changed to superbike-style bars and the front turn signals and engine case guards removed - but the originals will convey with the sale.

The bike is for sale locally priced at $3.2k and the auction will end early if sold. This is also the effective "buy it now" price. The reserve is considerably lower than that, however.

This bike has received a thorough mechanical refurbishment by Chris Finlayson of Existential Motorcycles. You can Google the shop name and read more about his work and philosophy of work.

Summary of work - 12 hrs. @ $65/hr. = $780 + $350 parts = $1,130. This bike is ready to ride with only basic maintenance for many years and many thousands of miles.

Basic health of engine is very good - 155 to 165 psi across all four cyls.
- NOTE: potential buyers are welcome to confirm these readings – taken with the engine at normal operating temperature and the throttles wide-open
re-shim valves to loose end of spec range – clearances on high-compression DOHC engines tighten up over time as the valve head hammers into the seat
install new valve cover gasket
strip/clean/rebuild front forks with new seals and spec type/amount of fork fluid
steering head bearings in good shape – clean/grease/reassemble/pre-load to spec
ditto front wheel bearings
all three brake calipers stripped/cleaned/rebuilt with new pads
both master cylinders stripped/cleaned/reassembled
carburetors stripped/cleaned/rebuilt with new slightly larger pilot jets - #40 vs spec 37.5
- bikes of this era were jetted leaner than optimum from the factory to meet US EPA tests.
install carbs with new fuel line/filter and sync carbs with vacuum gauges
factory air filter element replaced with custom washable/reusable oiled foam element
remove/clean/lube/adjust cam chain tensioner
clutch in good shape – friction plates well within thickness spec and steel plates flat
remove exhaust system/clean/reinstall with new header/exhaust port gaskets
rehab the wire harness – test for voltage drop across connections and clean/replace to reduce loss below acceptable limit – 1/10^th V per connection
ditto for the switches
clean/lube/replace cables
check spark timing and advance with strobe – good
tune pilot screws for best off-idle throttle response
rear wheel and swingarm bearings/bushings in good shape – clean/lube/reassemble
give the rear brake system the same treatment as the front
change oil and filter
install new battery
install new chain
test charging system output and regulator function – 14.2v @ 4k rpm - good
test-ride and make final adjustments
stock/original hi-rise buck-horn bozo bars replaced with superbike-bend bars (originals and front turn signals will convey with the bike)
ditto for the dorky engine case guards
otherwise, all parts and cosmetics are original
