This is quite the odd collection: it takes in older popular singers (Martin, Anka); newer albums by "traditional" singers (Anka again, Streisand); two Christmas albums, one "novelty" (Philbin); one "crossover" and one "classical crossover" (by the Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis); one country-Western classic (Cash); collections taking in country and blues, pop based on Irish folksong, a late-1960s film soundtrack -- and some honest-to-G*d rock and roll! (This listing has been revised as of 1 September 2014.)

The carrying case is the standard-issue item, a brand new one in heavy-gauge black canvas with a green panel, and a sturdy zipper. But I suspect it's the music that'll be the real "draw." Details follow:

Barbra Streisand: Higher Ground. Columbia CK 66181. A wonderfully diverse program of religious and inspirational music. Track listing:

1. I Believe / You'll Never Walk Alone
2. Higher Ground
3. At the Same Time
4. Tell Him
5. On Holy Ground
6. If I Could
7. Circle
8. The Water Is Wide / Deep River
9. Leading With Your Heart
10. Lessons to Be Learned
11. Everything Must Change
12. Avinu Malkeinu - (Hebrew)

This album opens with quiet sincerity in Barbra Streisand's restrained take on Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone," paired with an equally non-traditional version of the Frankie Laine hit, "I Believe," both of which set the tone for the remainder of HIGHER GROUND. Offerings range from show tunes and popular songs to traditional pieces like "The Water is Wide" and "Avinu Malkeinu," which is traditionally sung during Rosh Hashanah, and whose lyrics translate as "Cause all hate and oppression to vanish from the earth/Inscribe us for blessing in the Book of Life." HIGHER GROUND carries this sense of spirituality to a variety of levels, resulting in a very accessible and timeless collection of songs sung by one of the world's most popular divas, who is at her most powerful and passionate, her rich and expressive voice backed by a lush 70-piece orchestra.

Barbra Streisand's marriage to actor James Brolin inspired her to record an album of uplifting love songs that is her best work since THE BROADWAY ALBUM. "I've Dreamed of You" is a touching ballad inspired by a Norwegian instrumental, and is the first song Babs sang at her wedding. "Isn't it a Pity?" is the song the couple danced to first, and is a fabulous reworking of the George and Ira Gershwin tune. "The Island," originally done by Patti Austin in 1981, is a Caribbean-flavored number featuring Kenny G on tenor saxophone. "If You Ever Leave Me," a duet with Vince Gill, is a made-for-radio smash written by Richard Marx. "Just One Lifetime" is another song Barbra sang to James at their wedding, and contains a semi-classical arrangement by Marvin Hamlisch. "The Music That Makes Me Dance" originally appeared in 1963 on the FUNNY GIRL original Broadway cast recording.
Barbra Streisand's youthful enthusiasm and unmistakable voice make clear that we have yet to see the apex of her career.

"The glorious voice is still without parallel in contemporary pop....Her bravura remake of 'Music That Makes Me Dance'...and two newer works 'Just One Lifetime' and 'We Must Be Loving Right'" -- Entertainment Weekly, 10/99

In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a number of patriotic-themed compilation albums were released to help provide emotional solace to a traumatized America. While some featured orchestral versions of old standbys such as the "Star Spangled Banner," this collection centers around songs by some of the biggest pop artists. There are a couple of chestnuts hauled out here (Canadian siren Celine Dion takes on the titular anthem), most of the selections are original compositions by the artists, songs with a special place in the American pantheon. Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" is no chest-thumping, jingoistic anthem, but rather a poignant look at human feelings in the midst of war. Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water" speaks to anyone seeking spiritual comfort in times of strife. Touching the worlds of pop, folk, rock, gospel, country, and more, GOD BLESS AMERICA was designed with the feelings of troubled Americans in mind.
