Red Beryl (Bixbite) crystals in Rhyolite from the Violet Claims, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah

Single, sharp raspberry red Bixbite crystal in a textured white Rhyolite matrix with a darker mineral for added contrast. The crystal is sharp and complete, sitting upright in its matrix for easy display. Some Smoky Quartz is also present as well! From the Wah Wah mountains of Utah, a sweet display specimen of this rare material!

Measures 5.1 x 3.5 x 2.7 cm.

One of the rarest and most desirable minerals in the world, Red Beryl (Bixbite) was found only in Utah. Originally named after Maynard Bixby, a Utah collector/miner who first discovered it in the late 1890's. Over the course of it's 100+ year history, only a small amount of this red varietal of Beryl has ever been removed from the ground, especially when compared to the literal thousands of carats of Diamonds unearthed all over the globe. In order to extract this material, the Rhyolite matrix must be blindly broken apart with hammers and chisels, sometimes even explosives, as the Beryl crystals are rarely if ever seen on the surface of the rock. This is not by any means an easy mineral to extract – there are no healthy pockets discovered, no loose crystals on the surface, no hints as to where an exquisite specimen or large crystal may be lying inside the Rhyolite – the extraction of this material that results in specimens like the one offered here is a miracle in and of itself! To put it simply, these are exceedingly rare, difficult to mine, and quite beautiful!
