From our family collection, This has been in our family for over a century. It sat on a book shelf for decades then has been carefully wrapped in a box until now. We are experts in glass collectibles but will describe what we believe to be true. If you can add to our description please let us know and we will add it for other bidders
- This is a Gorham Sterling Silver lid and sterling rimmed American Brilliant Cut glass jar, Biscuit Jar or cracker jar
- The glass is unmarked but the design appears to be cut by Hawkes
- Overall dimensions are approximate: 8" tall(to the top of lid) X 4 3/4" wide
- The ruby or cranberry colored glass is "cut to clear" accenting the designs and creating exceptional brilliance
- The actual design of the diamond cut is the most sought after Hawkes "Chrysanthemum" pattern, patented only a few years prior to the manufacture of this jar and after this Hawkes design won the Paris Exposition, Grand Prize in 1889
- The lid is engrave; "1867 F 1892", which helps place the vintage of this jar to be manufactured in 1896 or 1897 (ordered or purchased) at that time to celebrate "25" years of marriage.
- The lid is marked with the all Gorham Hallmarks from the 1890's
- The silver rim of the jar is also marked STERLING
- We have photographed "a chip" and a flea bite(s) that are hard to see in person. There are 2 flea bites and 1 chip that we can see but please look at all the pictures for the actual condition of the this item as this is not 100% perfect. We feel this is certainly at least 98% without damages or imperfections any where.
- There are two dents in the sides of the Sterling Silver lid that could be easily repaired as this is sterling silver
- The color, clarity and cut of this Vase is exceptionally beautiful. In the light this displays truly brilliant rainbows of color. The "ruby cut to clear"glass design is simply unmatched by common clear cut glass.

On Sep-07-15 at 09:33:01 PDT, seller added the following information:MISPRINT in description: WE ARE "NOT" EXPERTS in this. So please ask questions and send us your expert options about this piece.
MAKERS MARKS: As we believe this to be manufactured in the late 1890's with no glass makers marks. We found this written about Hawkes Company trademarks: "The first acid-etched trademark, a slight revision of the previous mark, probably was not used until 1902. The gravic glass trademark was registered in 1903." What can you tell us ?
On Sep-12-15 at 00:30:39 PDT, seller added the following information:Several questions about color and clarity: The color and clarity is consistent all over. Apparently some pictures may look as dull areas. I can not change the bad pictures at this point, but be assured it has no 'dull' areas in person. Has some finger smugs from handling that show in the pictures
