 LOAD-POINT

When a load-point exists, the triangle of masonry directly above the opening is the only masonry that could collapse and therefore is the only masonry that requires temporary support.

A 35 degree angle in a Stretcher bond and a 25 degree angle in a Flemish bond from both ends of the opening up through the bed and perp joints to the central perpendicular joint where both angles meet is the load-point. The wider the opening the less chance of a load-point existing.

When the triangle of masonry is broken by a window and no load-point exists, the load from outside of the triangle will rest back over the length of the opening (including roof loads when they apply) and the load can weigh over ten times more than only the smaller triangle?

REDUCE LOADS SAFELY

Re-instate a load-point by fitting the Brick Brace Safety tool through the broken triangle which safely arches the masonry to reduce the load back to the smaller triangle.

Within a typical residential property props and attachments fitted at 900mm centres are overloaded  when no load-point exists as one linear metre of a typical 2.4m storey height of 4″ brickwork can weigh over 700 kg and over 1,400kg in 9″ brickwork.

A prop attachment can be dangerously overloaded with the same amount of ease as the manufacturer's say it is to use especially when sold or hired without any warnings or guidance, which is why we created the Brick Brace safety tool and why we provide instructions and guidance with every purchase.

 2016 PROPPING GUIDE

The main cause of collapse during masonry alterations is overloading equipment due to under estimating loads and over extending the equipment from the wall to gain further fitting space.

Safe Working Load (SWL) is the weight that a piece of lifting equipment or accessory can use to safely lift or suspend.

The safe working load of a prop attachment varies from 340kg down to 0kg and depends on the size of the Acrow prop used, which pin-hole height is used, how plumb and how far the Acrow prop is fitted from the wall.

An Acrow prop is designed to concentrically load on the axis only, (from head plate down to foot plate) with a maximum safe working load of approximately 3,400 kg reducing down to 700 kg when the inner tube is raised, please see photo no 10.

-

Fitting a traditional prop attachment reduces the safe working load of an Acrow props used working height by at least 90% due to the web of the attachment sending the load onto the side of the Acrow props extended inner tube, the Acrow prop curves and loses height when overloaded, over extended or when over tightened and is the duty of the user not to overload and work with an Acrow prop fitted with an attachment in a professional and safe manner.

-

Strengthen the masonry with the Brick Brace before propping to reduce loads and support everything above the opening. Gain further fitting space, reduce repair time and achieve a guaranteed superior and safer finish.

-

The traditional prop attachment was designed in the 1980's when cavities were only 50mm. Attempting tasks which require wider steels for wider cavities and still only using prop attachments is where further problems of overloading by over extending from the wall arise.

-

The Brick Brace safety tool was fully tested in multiples at C.E.R.A.M testing laboratories, (Stoke-On-Trent) and addresses all the issues of the main causes of minor and major collapse during masonry alterations.
