Wayang golek are wooden doll puppets that are operated from below by rods connected to the hands and a central control rod that runs through the body to the head. The simple construction of the puppets belies their versatility, expressiveness and aptitude for imitating human dance. Little is known for certain about the history of wayang golek, but scholars have speculated that it most likely originated in China and arrived in Java sometime in the 17th century. Some of the oldest traditions of wayang golek are from the north coast of Java in what is called the pasisir region. This is home to some of the oldest Muslim kingdoms in Java and it is likely the wayang golek grew in popularity through telling the wayang menak stories of Amir Hamza, the uncle of Muhammad. These stories are still widely performed in Kabumen, Tegal, and Jepara as wayang golek menak, and in Cirebon, wayang golek cepak. Legendary origins of wayang golek attribute their invention to the Muslim saint Wali Sunan Kudus, who used the medium to proselytize Muslim values. In the 18th century the tradition moved into the mountains of West Java where it eventually was used to tell stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabarata in a tradition now called wayang golek purwa, which can be found in Bandung, Bogor and Jakarta. Wayang golek purwa has become the most popular form of wayang golek today and the most famous puppeteer family is the Sunarya family which has produced several generations of stellar performers.

Die Länge vom Kopf bis zur Spitze des Haltestabs beträgt 57 cm, die Länge vom Kopf bis unter die Kleider 61 cm. Das Gewicht beträgt 304 Gramm.

Das Wayang Golek oder Holzpuppen (Stabpuppen)
Die gespielten Inhalte gleichen denen des Wayang Kulit, Die Aufführungen finden jedoch am Tage, oder nachts mit ausreichender Beleuchtung statt. Die Besucher sitzen auch nicht vor einer weißen Leinwand, wie im Kino, sondern vor einer erhöhten Bühne mit einer Wand oder Vorhang, die den Dalang verbirgt. Vor dem Dalang liegt auch kein Bananenstrunk, der die Puppen aufnimmt, sondern ein Plangkan (eine Art Tisch mit Löchern in der Tischplatte), auf dem die benötigten Puppen bereitgestellt werden.
In Zentral- und Ostjava werden bevorzugt Stücke aus dem Menak gespielt, die Geschichten von Amir Hamzah, dem Onkel des Propheten Muhammad, das auch kurz als Wayang Menak bezeichnet wird. In Westjava werden im Wayang Golek dagegen mehr die Geschichten aus dem Mahabharata und Ramayana bevorzugt. Die Geschichten um Amir Hamzah wurden im 16ten Jahrhundert zur Unterstützung der Verbreiterung des Islams geschaffen. Neben der Hauptfigur sind darin noch sein bester Freund und Berater, Umar Maya (Umarmaya), sein General Selandir (oder Alam Daur), seine Hauptfrau Putri Muniggarim, sein streitsüchtiger Schwiegervater Nursiwan, viele andere Könige mit denen man Kriege führen muss oder gute Beziehungen pflegen, Prinzessinnen und auch Teufel (ehemalige Dämonen). Ein Teil der Geschichten finden in die Zeit vor der Geburt des Propheten Muhammad statt und beinhalten sowohl die alten animistischen Erzählungen, als auch solche mit hinduistischem Hintergrund.

This is an unused puppet made of wood (Wayang Golek) from Indonesia. Unfortunately I am not an expert in this area. I cannot describe the puppet. The clothes of the puppet are made of used textiles which can be not intact, dirty or torn. Please have a look at the photos. The age is approx. 30 years.
The length from the head to the tip of the support stick is 57 cm, the length from the head down to below the clothes is 61 cm. The weight is 304 grams.
