FROM PEKING TO MANDALAY - A JOURNEY FROM NORTH CHINA TO BURMA THROUGH TIBETAN SSUCH'UAN AND YUNNAN, by R. F. (Reginald F.) Johnston.  Published by John Murray, London, in 1908.  Johnston (1874 or 6-1938) was a Scottish diplomat who was the tutor and advisor to Puyi, the last emperor of China (made famous by the film The Last Emperor), within the Forbidden City.  He was also the last colonial governor of Weihaiwei.   Johnston  traveled extensively within China, in the first part of the last century taking this journey to become more familiar with the various tribes in China that inhabit the wilder regions of Chinese Tibet and northwestern Yunnan. The trip took about a year, ascending the Yangtse to Ssuch'uan, and from there across the province to eastern Tibet (Chinese Tibet), then south through those states to Yunnan and into Burma.  Contents: introduction, Peking to Ichang, Ichang to Wan-Hsien through the Yangtse Gorges, Wan-Hsien to Ch'eng-tu, Ch'eng-tu to Omei-Hsien, Mount Omei and Chinese Buddhism, Mount Omei, Omei-Hsien to Tachienlu, Tachienlu, Tachienlu to Pa-u-Rong - Yalung River, Pa-u-Rong to Muli, Muli to Yung-ning, Yung-ning to Li-chiang, Li-chiang to Tali-fu, ethnology of the Chinese far west, Tali-fu to Bhamo, Bhamo to Mandalay, conclusion.  With 2 appendices -- vocabularies, and itinerary, plus notes, an index and an index of names.  With 39 vintage photographs and a fold-out map.  Very good condition, map is very good. Some slight wear to cover along edges.  One of the endpapers has been reinforced with tape along the gutter.  Tight binding.
