1803 Half Eagle Pattern Gaming Counter

This is a good one! Early numismatists believed this piece struck in copper/brass was a genuine pattern for 1803 gold coin, an off-metal strike, and was listed as such in early pattern books. However, today, we know it was made by Kettle and Son as a gaming counter. These 1803 pieces came in two sizes: quarter eagle and half eagle.

Collecting game counters is the last frontier of numismatics. Every other field has been thoroughly researched to the max.

Our piece has some of its original gilt still left. Weakly struck centers, which is the norm.  Some scratches front and back.

George Washington Success tokens that sell for big bucks are also gaming counters struck circa 1800 as this 1803 counter  is and came in denomination of $2.5 and $5. And probably also struck by Kettle.
