FAQ:
1:What can be dipped?
A: Basically any item that you can get the base coat paint to adhere to
and any item can be submerged in water for 30-60 seconds.
2: What is Hydrographics? A: Hydrographic printing is the process
that takes pre-designed images and applies them to almost any 3-dimensional
item.
3: What do I need for the Hydrographic
process? A: At its most basic you will need a container large enough
for the item to be dipped, water, prep materials for substrate being processed,
Base coat paint, Activator, a way to rinse the part after dipping, and clear
coat to apply after.
4: What paint should I use for base coat, is it
needed? A: Yes you
must apply a fresh base coat to any item to be dipped “the exception to this is
ABS plastic”. Without the fresh base coat your print will not adhere to the
part. We recommend using high quality automotive paints.
5: Can I use spray cans from Walmart or Home
Depot? A: NO! The
spray cans you get from Walmart and Home Depot will not give you consistent
results. These paints do not work well with the process as the paint dries too
hard and it does not allow the pattern to adhere to the base.
6: Can you recommend any base coat brands? A: Yes, I always suggest finding your
paint locally from a reputable automotive supplier. I use NASON, PPG, And
Sherwin Williams. If you are wanting to buy online, I suggest using Low Country
Hydro Paint. They designed and make a paint for the hydrographic process. It's
sold in aerosols and HVLP applications.
7: What activator do I use? A: I suggest 1 activator only it’s the
only activator I sell and use in my shop, I have been dipping for over 8 years.
Its called Hydro-Vator by Express Chem. It can be found online by searching
“Hydro Vator Activator” It's sold in cans or aerosols. You can use this with
any film on the market with practice. You just need to learn to read films to
decide if they need more or less activator.
8: What side of the film goes on the water? A: When unrolling the film it can get
confusing as to what side of the film goes on the water. Myself after 8 years
have to check from time to time. The best method that I have found is by
wetting your thumb and pointy finger, pinch the corner of the film. As your
release your pinch the side that sticks to your finger is the side that goes to
the water.
9: Why do I have pin holes after I rinse the
par? A:You’re not
enough activator or the activator is unevenly sprayed.
10: Why after I rinsed the item did it rinse off
and smear? A:You’re using
too much activator.
11: I’m getting large air bubbles that pop and
leaves a void. Why? A:
You're trapping air try again with more of an angle.
12: The film distorts as I spray activator, why? A: Either you’re spraying too much
or you need to close your dams to not allow it to stretch as far.
13: How durable is the finish? A: Its only as durable as the
materials you use when doing the process. I always tell my customers it’s as
durable if not more durable than any car that’s on the road today.
14: What temperature does the water need to be? A: It’s been the industry's
standards for years to have your water at 90 degrees for the process. Many have
started using colder water in the range of 60-75 degrees and have had success,
they are saying that the heavy ink films stay brighter.
15: How much film should I use for “Blank”? A: Without seeing your item I
can’t give you an answer. I suggest looking at the item and leaving enough film
on the sides to take in account for all the stretch the film has to do to get
to all places on the part being dipped.
16: Where can I get help or more information
about the hydrographic process? A: You're always welcome to ask any question. If
you’re looking for official training there are several companies who offer
this. Besides official training you can look for instructional videos online
and many forums are created for this process.
17: I don’t have spray equipment or large area
to do this, can I still do the process? A: If you’re just wanting to do some small parts
for yourself absolutely. Activator, Base coat paint, and Clear coat as
explained above can be bought in aerosols cans. Find a watertight container
large enough to dip the items you’re wanting to process and have fun.
18:
I’ve never done the process will it be hard to learn? A: It can
be challenging to learn with all the different variables taking place. If you
follow the suggestions in this FAQ it should help with your learning curve. I
always suggest to new customers/dippers to take the time to do some research,
practice on some throw away items like speed shapes or light switch covers.
Learn how to read the film as you spray activator to know when it’s ready to be
dipped.
