There was a huge crowd to watch the race but rather than seeing Clark take the lead as usual, they witnessed Brabham and Gurney go into the lead in the two Brabhams with McLaren and Hill also ahead of Clark. It did not last long and on lap four Clark was back in the lead again. As Clark pulled away from the rest, McLaren went out with engine trouble. Gurney overtook Brabham for second place and a few laps later Barbham's engine blew up. This promoted Hill to third place although he soon came under attack from Surtees. On lap 59 Gurney went out with engine failure and so Clark was left with a lead nearly a minute over Hill and Surtees. On the last lap Hill ran out of fuel which allowed Surtees to pass him and grab second place.

FRENCH GRAND PRIX

The race itself began in chaotic fashion as the local officials decided on their own version of the F1 rules and so Graham Hill, who had stalled on the grid, was allowed to start from his usual position rather than at the back of the field. The starter then gave the starting signal using a red flag. Despite this the field managed to get away without undue drama and Clark took the lead. He was completely dominant all afternoon and won by over a minute. Behind the Lotus there were the usual slipstreaming battles but eventually Brabham emerged in second place until he suffered an engine problem and dropped back. This put G Hill into second but the BRM was in difficulties with a slipping clutch and on the penultimate lap Maggs passed him to take second place. It was later decided that Hill should be allowed to keep his position but he was not given the points because of his push-start.

DUTCH GP

At the start of the race Clark managed to maintain his position and went into the lead with Hill and McLaren chasing him. McLaren's challenge ended quickly when he ran into gearbox trouble and so Brabham moved to third place and on lap five he overtook Hill to take second. Brabham battled for second with Hill while behind them Surtees and Gurney tussled over fourth place. Hill reestablished himself in second while Brabham went out on lap 55 when his throttle became stuck with sand. Hill then ran into overheating trouble and had to stop and so Surtees and Gurney were able to get ahead. On lap 63 Surtees made a mistake and allowed Gurney ahead. Hill fought back and was about to pass Gurney for second when the BRM went out with engine failure.

This left Clark as the dominant victor with Gurney second and Surtees third. Ireland brought the BRP-BRM home in fourth position while Scarfiotti ended the day in sixth behind Ginther.
