Vintage IBM MVS Rel 3.8J

myMVS lets you run the colossal IBM MVS 3.8J operating system from 1980. This is a large and compilcated OS that ran airline reservations systems with thousands of terminal connected to a single computer while at the same time handling accounting, billing, inventory. It's successor, z/OS runs most large corporate IT needs today. Of course you are not going to hang 1000's of terminals off a PC but it is the same operating system and lots of fun to play with. It has TSO time sharing option which you can test drive here. There are quite a few compilers with example JCL & source included: ALGOL ALGOL68C COBOL FORTRAN GPSS MORTRAN PL/1 PASCAL SNOBOL4 SIMULA PL/360 Assembler / ASSIST Student Assembler RPG. I have just added the 1979 version of the SUPRTREK game (a text based Star Trek game), one of the very first computer games conceived. Also installed is the UNIX Snake game. It runs on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, 8, and the new Windows 10, Linux, and Mac OSX. A series of screenshots can be seen here. Instructions are provided to install and boot the OS, submit your first job via the card reader, start TSO and submit an example, and then shut it all down cleanly.
 
VBBlue3270 is a 3270 terminal emulator that can be used to connect to MVS TSO as a normal user would in a mainframe shop. You can have your myMVS running in your basement computer room and connect to it with this terminal emulator from anywhere else in the house, or if you adjust your home router/firewall the internet as well.
 
It comes on a CD setup and ready to boot, a 32 and 64 bit Hercules Windows installer, the Hercules source tarball for building on Linux, and the Java runtime environment installation package for Windows. For Linux or Mac OSX the Java runtime would need to be downloaded from Oracle or installed from your repository.
