This listing is for a lot of THREE NATIVE AMERICAN SHELL JEWELRY PIECES; 1 CHOKER; 2 ADORNMENT ACCESSORIES. These Handmade, One-of-a-Kind pieces are from an unnamed Yurok/Hupa Artisan. The Yurok and Hupa are from the extreme Northern California Coastal Region. While most of the pieces we list are "unworn", these are Vintage, 1980's, likely worn showing some wear to the leather strips. The Shells and Beads are Clean; the Spiral Snail Shells have small "drill holes" in them, obviously for use in crafts--1 has a small hole that is Not round and could be "breakage"--please look at the close up of the Shell, photo #2. Photos #2, #3 and #4 show close-ups of all the Spiral Shells, which have lovely spiraling and make unique pieces of jewelry. There are 3 pieces in this lot--1 piece is a Choker; the other 2 pieces are a type of adornment that can be tied to clothing; hair; accessories--whatever you choose! The Choker is Unique on its own; the adornment pieces are nearly identical with the "differences" being the "holes" in the Spiral Shells. The Spiral Shells are nearly identical varying slightly in the color and spiraling patterns. These are Spiral Sea Snail Shells that spiral in the same direction. They are prepped for crafts so they do have small "drill holes" for threading. The Spiral Shells are approx. 1 3/4" across, 3/4" high and 4 3/4" around.
The Choker is made from 1 Spiral Sea Shell that has a 20 1/2" Strip of Brown Suede Leather threaded through the top back of the Shell. The strip is approx. 1/3" wide; 1 strip is approx. 10" long, the other, 10 1/2". The leather piece is fairly worn and dry, particularly at the ends--the piece was tied and stored for quite some time and the piece can be treated and restored if so desired. The strip fits tightly in the Shell and we've moved it a bit not wanting to cause damage; it is likely removable. Because of the length of the strips, this fits as a Choker. Dangling from the bottom of the Shell are 2 strands of clear "fishing twine" threaded with Glass Beads and Shells. The strands are 4 1/2" long with the same pattern on each strand. The lovely pattern consists of small Black Glass Beads(2mm); Earthen Red w/Black and White Striped Glass Beads(3mm); 3/4" Light Earthen Red Slim Glass Tube Bead; Small Round Shell Disks; a 3/4" Sea Bead and a 1" x 1/2" Cowrie Shell at the bottom. The Cowrie Shells make a unique "clacking" sound when they "hit" each other. The Cowrie Shells are also a very pretty Mottled Brown that complement the entire color pattern. There are a total of 10 Small Black Glass Beads; 8 Striped Beads; 6 Shell Disks; 2 Glass Tube Beads; 2 Sea Beads and 2 Cowrie Shells.
The other two items are similar in size and style with the same number of Shells, etc. Differences will be noted. These two pieces may have been part of a larger piece--they were Not "necklaces" that broke--they look to be adornments that may be tied to the clothing, hair, accessories--they are threaded through the to back of the Spiral Shells with an approx. 13 1/2" thin strip(1/8") of Off White Leather--Leather on the topside, Suede on the underside. One strip is approx. 7" long, the other, 6 1/2". The strips do show wear with discoloration. Dangling from the bottom of the Shells are 2 strands of "White Floss" threaded with Glass Beads, Dentalium and Sea Beans. The strands are 3 1/2" long with the same pattern on all strands. The strands consist of Black Glass Seed Beads; Small Red Glass Pony Beads; 3/4" Dentalium Shells; Small Black Glass Tube Beads and 3/4" Dark Sea Beads. The Black Seed Beads are "looped" at the top; the Sea Beads have been Dark Washed and some of the light color of the Seed shows; because Dentalium are "natural" shells, there are slight differences is size and shape, as well as possible light bits of "chipping" to the larger ends. Each strand(for both pieces) has the same beaded pattern: 14 Black Glass Seed Beads; 1 small Red Glass Pony Bead; 2 Dentalia; 1 small Red Pony Bead; 1 tiny Black Glass Barrel Bead; 1 small Red Pony Bead; 2 Dentalia; 1 small Red Pony Bead; 1 Sea Bead and 1 small Red Pony Bead. Each piece has a total of 28 Black Seed Beads; 10 Red Pony Beads; 8 Dentalium; 2 Black Barrel Beads and 2 Sea Beans.
