Product DescriptionThis is chess with a twist - this is chess for three players! Three player chess is instantly understandable for anybody who can play the original game, all rules from the two player variant are common. Additional rules, that are required for the third player, are detailed within the instruction booklet, and accompanying leaflet. Three player chess opens up more possibilities to enjoy the traditional game. Three player Chess on a hexagonal board. 3 player chess played with just the same rules as standard 2 player chess but adjusted to take account of the hexagonal board. The game is not a gimmick; it's a really interesting version of Chess that enables an extra player to play. The 'extra' rules are minimal = they are listed in the simple rule booklet, and any anomolies can easily be sorted by the 3 players. The ramifications of of the hexagonal board turn out to be pretty fascinating, once you've understood the way that pieces move through the middle point. For instance: - Having a temporary ally can be more important than having a good position. Two poorer players can gang up on the better player so the better player is not always guaranteed to win.
- An exchange of pieces is usually a bad idea. If you exchange pieces with another player, the 3rd player is now a piece up!
- The value of the diagonally moving pieces is somewhat increased as they threaten more squares than on the traditional chessboard. So one could perhaps argue that the exchange of a Bishop for a Knight is less viable.
StrategyThe introduction of a third player drastically changes the style of play. Many chess openings are useless due to the extended board and third player. The introduction of the 'extra' move by the third player can introduce situations of deadlock, for example if a white piece is undefended and simultaneously attacked by both black and red pieces. Black cannot take the white piece, since red would then capture the black piece next turn. Thus the black and red pieces are both simultaneously attacking the white piece and defending it from attack by the other player. In similar situations, a piece can move quite safely into a square where it is attacked by both opponents, since neither opponent would take the piece and risk capture by the third player. Each player must think twice as far ahead — anticipating the moves of both opponents, with the added complexity that the next player may move to attack either of his opponents. Check, Checkmate and CAPTURE the purpose of the game is to capture opponent’s king. This happens when the king is put into check and cannot get out of check. There are only three ways a king can get out of check: move out of the way (though he cannot castle!), block the check with another piece, or capture the piece threatening the king. If a king cannot escape checkmate then you miss your turn and wait. It is also possible for the other player to save you. The chance to do it is big, because only the player whoCAPTURES the king is winner. If not so, the king is captured and the game is simply declared over. The player who captured the king is the winner. The boards are made from a stained wood as are the pieces. They are folding and hinged with storage trays inside so that, when closed, they form a storage container for the pieces. There are also two metal catches to keep the box closed. The set has a 8.5cm (3 inch) King; it measures approx 54cm (21.5 inches) from point to point across the board, and approx 47cm (18.5 inches) across the centre 'fold'. Pieces are Red, White and Brown to match the board (which is varnished). The 'Squares' on the board are 'engraved' into the wood Simple Rules Booklet (in various languages) and informaton sheet is included and the superb site WWW.THREECHESS.COM has a wealth of information and can match players around the world to play.
