#2 LARGE AFRICAN BLACKWOOD MAKONDE UJAMAA POLE - TREE OF LIFE 23"

Here is another outstanding 1/2 log Ujamaa pole or "Tree of Life" from the world famous Makonde woodcarvers of Tanzania.  Ujamaa is Swahili for the ideology of Tanzania's socialist politics which resonates with the symbology of all people working together to build a strong community. The figures on this pole are in high relief and the facial features are refined and well-detailed.  Since the figures on this pole are not x-deep relief, there is much more ebony wood left which makes it a heavier pole at nearly 16 lbs. The 23" pole was carved from the RARE and soon to be protected African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon). Locally, this wood is called "Mpingo" or Mozambique Ebony.   Ebony wood is extremely dense and hard to carve and typically, a quality detailed Ujamaa pole like this one might take up to one month per foot to complete.  This piece weighs 15 lbs. 11 oz.
