Major-General Richard James Moberly, CB, OBE, KStJ, late Royal Signals, died at Kingston Upon Thames, England, December 21, 2001, aged 95.

He was born July 2, 1906, the son of J.E. Moberly; and educated at Haileybury and the Royal Military Academy Woolwich.

He was commissioned into the Royal Signals in 1926; served in India 1928-35; cmd 1st Airborne Division, Signals Regiment, 1942-3; CSO 1st Airborne Corps, 1943-5; Comdt Indian Signal Training Centre, 1946-7; Deputy Comdt, School of Signals, 1949-52; Deputy Director of Signals, War Office, 1952-54; CSO, Northern Army Group, 1954-57; Signal-Officer-in-Chief, War Office, 1957-60; Comr for Dorset, St Johns Ambulance, 1968-76.

He retired from the Army in 1960, and became Director, Communications Electronic Equipment, War Office until 1964.

He married firstly, 1935, Mary Joyce Shelmerdine, (died 1964), three  daughters, Priscilla, Jane and Sarah; married secondly, 1971, Mrs Vivien Mary Cameron, (d. 1981).

Moberly was appointed OBE, 1944; CB, 1957; and KStJ, 1986.
