This strikingly detailed “End of Watch (EOW)” Challenge Coin memorializes the dedicated, professional, and courageous service of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Police Officer Sean A. Collier (Badge #179), who made the ultimate sacrifice on April 18, 2013 while responding to a disturbance on campus.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police Department (MIT Police) is charged with providing a safe academic environment, law enforcement, and emergency medical service to the 168-acre campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) located along the northern bank of the Charles River basin in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

On April 15th 2013, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, planted two improvised explosive devices near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Moments later, the two terrorists remotely detonated their bombs, killing three spectators and wounding more than 260 other people. Three days later, during an intense manhunt that shut down the Boston area, Tamerlan assassinated 27-year old MIT Police Officer Collier in his patrol car as the Tsarnaev brothers attempted to further arm themselves to avoid apprehension for their cowardly attacks. That following night, on April 19th, 26-year-old Tamerlan died when Dzhokhar ran over him in their escape vehicle while attempting to flee from a shootout with police in Watertown, a suburb to the west of Boston. Later that same day, police captured 19-year-old Dzhokhar, who was subsequently charged with multiple federal offenses in the District of Massachusetts.

On March 4, 2015, the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev began in United States District Court in Boston, nearly two years after the pre-trial hearings. On April 8, 2015, the jury found Tsarnaev guilty on all thirty counts of the indictment. The charge of usage of a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, in addition to aiding and abetting, made Tsarnaev eligible for the death penalty. On June 24, 2015, U.S. District Court Judge George O'Toole formally sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death by lethal injection for his heinous crimes.

This uncirculated law enforcement tribute Challenge Coin measures approximately 1.75 inches in diameter.
