There is a quotation which was originally stated by Confucius, I would like to present it here as a very
practical statement on how the human mind approaches the learning process:
I hear, and I forget
I see, and I remember
I do, and I understand --- Confucius
Yes, you may learn an activity by hearing others talk about it, or by
watching others do it. But, your learning will be at its best if you
yourself perform it. This would not only make you understand the
underlying process, but also would help you practice and perfect the
process. In the field of programming logic, this means writing many
small programs or subroutines, and test the functionality by utilizing
some simulator software. This is exactly what this e-book aims at, in
the context of programming a 4-floor elevator using a Siemens Simatic
Step7-300 & Logo PLCs. Assuming that you have a little background
with PLCs, this book teaches you step-by-step on how to program the PLC
to control all the mechanisms associated with an elevator. In general,
what are the elevator features/components/modules that need to be
programmed/controlled/managed? The basic requirements are to manage the
UP/DOWN movement of the elevator-car, OPENING/CLOSING of the
elevator-car, displaying the current position of the elevator-car or in
which direction it moves, generating an alarm under abnormal conditions,
etc. Also, the movement of the car or its doors should be smooth and at
the required pace, and the parking of the car should occur at the
specified levels. All these features and more can be achieved by
programming the PLC appropriately, and wiring the PLC output with the
respective output devices. In order to control or manage these output
devices, what are the inputs that the PLC requires? 7 mechanical limit
switches to detect the exact location of the car, 10 push-buttons to
detect which keypad number is pushed to direct the elevator-car to that
particular floor, 4 limit switches to control the sliding car door when
it is closed or opened, and 4 limit switches to turn on an alarm when
any of the floor doors is open accidentally. Hence control ladder logic
program has to control a total of 25 mechanical limit switches in
harmony! PLUS 24 output port terminals to control two DC motors, hoist
and car door, 9 LED indicators to display which push-button key is
depressed, 3 outputs to display the floor number where the car is parked
at, 2 flickering LEDs to show direction of the car, 2 LED indicators to
control car's inside lighting and alarm, and finally 1trigger signal
output to activate the announcing system when the car reaches the
destination floor.
Total of 21 outputs! With the help of relevant
schematic/wiring diagrams, the book explains in detail how all these
input and outputs can be controlled by the PLC to achieve the desired
functional specifications. By becoming familiar with the solutions for
implementing this project, the reader will acquire the knowledge,
experience, and confidence to handle the PLC projects of even more
complexities.
Topics covered in the text are:
Chapter 1:

features you like. You can learn to master your programming knowledge
just by simulating yours and checking out its performance and comparing
it against my solution. This way you can improve your programming
knowledge! And if you stuck at any step, you can check out my solution
against yours and use the explanation to understand the reasoning
behind.
