This Chinese Gold Panda coin is made of solid 99.9% Gold (= AU .999 fine) and has a face value of 10 Yuan. This attractive uncirculated gold coin features a panda bear sipping from a pool of water.
Scarce Year - Low Mintage "Y" - Shenyang Mint- only 37,000 coins produced!
1987 was one of the few years that gold panda coins were minted at two different mints. Some will have a "S" mint mark below the Panda's portrait indicating they were minted at the Shanghai Chinese government (PRC- People's Republic of China) mint. Others will have a "Y" mint mark indicating they were minted at the Shenyang Chinese Mint. This coin has an "Y" mint mark, is rarer than the "S" mint, and was minted at the ShenYang mint.
The designs of the Panda gold coins changes most every year. Coin collectors love to build a collection of these. In some years they are minted in different sizes and are made of both gold and silver. The Tenth ounce size is the 2nd smallest size gold panda that China normally makes. Size is about 17 to 18mm in diameter (smaller than a US penny). Because they are sometimes used to make jewelry, rings, and necklaces there are fewer of the sealed individual coins in existence.
The obverse of the coin bears the Chinese inscription: “The People's Republic of China”. Below this inscription is an image of the Temple of Heaven. Below the temple is the year of production.
