RAINBOW LATTICE SUNSTONE, ARTICLE FROM GEMS AND GEMOLOGY 1989

A beautiful new form of orthoclase. A phenomenal Australian orthoclase feldspar that shows both a unique pattern of aventurescence as well as the traditional adularescence was recently brought to our attention by two separate gem dealers. Maxwell J. Faulkner, of Banora Point, New South Wales, Australia, first showed this attractive new material to us in fall 1988. He had obtained his samples from Lonny Mason, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. They had named this feldspar "Rainbow Lattice Sunstone" because of the spectrum of colors seen in reflected light and the lattice pattern of the inclusions. Initial testing of Mr. Faulkner's samples showed that they were orthoclase feldspar containing crystallographically oriented exsolutioi~inclusions of ilmenite. This attractive new Australian orthoclase feldspar, named "Rainbow Lattice Sunstone" by Max Faulkner, shows a unique aventurescence as well as adularescence. Stone conrtesy of Bill Vance; photo by Robert Weldon. and hematite, which are responsible for the colorful aventurescence. Our second exposure to this new aventurescent orthoclase feldspar came through Bill Vance of Hampton, Virginia, who had obtained his material from Darren Arthur of Melbourne, Australia. The feldspars from Mr. Faulkner and Mr. Vance were identical in every respect. According to information provided by Mr. Faulkner, moonstone comes from an area known as the Mud Tank Zircon Field, in the Harts Range area of Australia's Northern Territory, which may be the source of this new material.

About Us:

We strive to bring you the best quality stones, the best knowledge, and the best experience in the gemstone industry.  Each stone we sell was cut by a master gemstone cutter (Lapidary) some with international awards.  Each stone is hand cut by one of our artisans in the United States.  We strive to deliver the best cut as well as highlight the most unusual and or unique patterns our stones can show.  We believe that far too many gemstone cutters nowadays cut for the biggest stone sacrificing quality.  We believe that a high quality stone with a unique pattern all its own will always outshine a larger gem that was cut just for size.  We take great care with our stones before and after cutting to insure you get the best gem without any worries.  In the case of opal we store them for a minimum of 3 months before cutting and an additional 3-6 months after to make sure that they are of the best stability.  We must note that no opal can be guaranteed stable as there are far too many factors that can cause an opal to craze.

Please read!

- Pictures are taken under artificial light with a digital camera to reveal all the potential of the stone
- Each item is enlarged 3-5 times to display the color and pattern details (some also angled)
- On some pieces there is a light  arc which is reflected off the high polish, it is not in the stone
- There always will be some loss or distortion of color due to the difference between the various computer monitors. This simply cannot be avoided. But we believe that in every way, these are the most honest pictures that can be taken of these stones.
Indeed, it is utterly impossible to capture the true beauty of the opal. The seductive change in color and pattern that can be only seen by moving the stones in different light conditions, is only for the eye of the beholder.

Note: Photographing a gemstones is difficult due to the nature of the gems.  We take many photos of each stone before choosing the best to show you.  The photos will never due the stone justice.  Please read the description carefully so you understand what you are buying.  I do my best to describe the stones to the best of my ability and should you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Please be aware that certain stones such as opal can and often do appear different in different lighting as well as where you may be living in relation the equator.
