Ted Johnson’s father bought him his first accordion at age 11 and just one year later, Ted had his own Combo Band playing High School dances in Alameda and the surrounding Bay Area.  By 17, the “Ted Johnson Band” now had a steady gig at Agrella’s Tavern in Oakland. In 1935, at age 19, he first joined Dude Martin’s “Nevada-Nightherders” Western Swing Band. In addition to being an amazing accordion player, he went on to become Band Leader, Manager and then Partner. At the outbreak of WWII, Ted joined the US Navy’s Special Services and oversaw the entertainment aboard ships and hospitals. In 1945, he left the Navy and joined “Dude Martin’s Round Up Gang” and they were the first professional group to perform on TV in San Francisco and then appeared on “The Hoffman Hayride Variety Show”. He went on to record for Victor and with Dude, co-wrote many songs. One of their most famous was  “If You Want Some Lovin’” which was made popular by Theresa Brewer. Ted was interviewed about his career and it's archived in the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame.

Below is a video of "The Round Up Gang" on TV showing Ted playing a miniature accordion in a comedy musical number.
