* * * *   SET OF 8 MATCHING COCKTAIL SHOT CUPS AND TRAY   * * * *

For sale is an antique CHINESE export silver matching set of 8 beaker shot cups and 

serving tray.  The set of 8 parcel gilt cups are handmade with applied decoration 

depicting a dragon in clouds; each cup is 2" tall by 1-3/8" in diameter.  The set also 

includes a rectangular tray with an etched dragon in clouds, a border handchased and

repousse with dragons and clouds, and an old Chinese script meaning - good fortune or

happiness.  This tray is 9-1/8" long by 6-1/4" wide.  Total weight is 302 grams.

For all the good fortune symbols in China the dragon is by far the most potent of them

all.  The sight of a dragon soaring amoungst the clouds is a common feature of Chinese

paintings; clouds are often referred as being the symbol of "celestial mobility".  According 

to popular Chinese belief clouds are taken as a symbol of good luck.  The depiction of

the dragon with the clouds combines two of the most potent good fortune symbols of

Chinese History.

  No apparent hallmarks and unknown silver content.  There are no apparent condition 

concerns.  Never monogrammed.
