Sony E-mount adapted VIVITAR 24mm f2 Manual Focus Super-Wide Angle Prime Lens – 22811207 *

Offered is an e-mount adapted VIVITAR 24mm f2 manual focus super wide-angle prime lens.  This substantial all metal and glass optic was built by Kino Optical, or Kiron, and definitely falls into the category of “cult lens”.  It scales very well to the compact dimensions of the NEX and Alpha “mirrorless” Interchangeable Lens Cameras.  It has the critical sharpness and contrast that I have learned are primary requirements for a great many of the ILC shooters.  It will function admirably in “Aperture Priority” mode.  Pre-set the ISO, set White Balance to “Auto”, click in the desired aperture, focus, and shoot.  The camera will select the shutter speed to give you a perfect exposure time and again.  This lens has an approximate equivalent “wide” focal length of 36mm on the 1.5x “crop factor” Sony mirrorless bodies.  The e-mount cameras are particularly appropriate for manual focus duty, as they have the great “focus peaking” feature.

 * I have recently learned that the new Sony A7 II has a metal bayonet that does not fit well with most aftermarket adapters.  If you have this camera then I would be willing to ship it without the adapter, and refund $9.

Images #4 thru #6, and #9-#10 are completely unaltered, uncropped images taken on a NEX 5n with this adapted lens a couple of days ago, during a brief respite from the thick haze of the King Fire.  They are uploaded straight from the SD card to eBay.  Of course eBay shrinks them down, but not with obvious degradation.  They are Fine Jpegs and file sizes are approximately 3 to 5 MB.  In aperture priority the camera chose between of 1/30th and 1/50th of a second, and all were handheld.  Settings were Auto White Balance; with the aperture ring on f11; the camera set to ISO 100; and "focus peaking" on Medium.

Vivitar made several versions of the 24mm, and they are generally regarded as being on par with the offerings from the major players.  This is the Kiron manufactured version with a 55mm front filter thread.  Urban legend has it that Kino was founded by a number of former Nikon optical engineers.  Whatever the truth is, they are a highly-regarded lens builder with quite a resume’ of sought after legacy glass, including the legendary Lester Dine 105mm macro.  They were the first maker to build Series 1 lenses for Vivitar, and went on to create hundreds of thousands of optics for them.  This is an MD mount version, and adapts very easily to mirrorless cameras.  If you have the MD to m4/3 adapter, you can use it with any other MD/MC mount lens.

This Made in Japan lens is graded as in GOOD condition, the downgrade due to moderate indications of prior use, such as slight paint loss on the focus and aperture rings [SEE PHOTOS].  Front and rear elements are nice, and aperture blades are snappy and free of oil.  Focus action is smooth and well-damped.  Aperture detents are medium and in half-stops.   The lens arrives with the MD to e-mount adapter with rear cap, and a front pinch cap.

Glass Disclaimer - Frequently, lenses, even when brand new, will have a slight amount of dust visible within the lens elements. This is a result of the manufacturing process and will not affect image quality or resolution. As a result, used lenses may exhibit the same consistencies.
