1772 Lectures on the Materia Medica, William Cullen 1st ed.

From the Royal College of Surgeons library, this book has two stamps to title page and one to p1. Published T. Lowndes, London. Full leather, recently re-backed with repairs to corners and new end papers, original labels retained. Bookplate to verso of title page.  Some slight browning to page edge and occasional spots of foxing (heavier on a few pages). v, [3], 512 including errata and adverts. The 1772 edition is the true first edition and an important work of the Scottish Enlightenment. A cheaper Irish edition, in a smaller format and reduced typeface was quickly brought out in 1773 and the 1773 edition of the Lectures, published by Lowndes with the author's consent, may have been a response to this. The 1773 Lowndes edition contains a 19p emendanda to the end but is also 512p; furthermore, Cullen sold the copyright to Lowndes in 1772, prior to publication of the first edition, and, subject to some unknown clause in a contract, it was also published with the author's consent.
