James A Montgomery was born in Germantown section of Philadelphia on June 13, 1866. He attended the Episcopal Academy in suburban Philadelphia before enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall of 1883. Montgomery's family was also very involved with Penn. Of his seven siblings, four attended Penn; and of his three children, two earned degrees from Pen. Montgomery died on February 6, 1949 at his home in Germantown section of Philadelphia.
