A thunderegg (or thunder egg) is a nodule-like rock, similar to a filled geode, that is formed within rhyolitic volcanic ash layers. Thundereggs are rough spheres, most about the size of a baseball—though they can range from less than an inch to over a meter across. Thundereggs usually look like ordinary rocks on the outside, but slicing them in half and polishing them may reveal intricate patterns and colors. A characteristic feature of thundereggs is that (like other agates) the individual beds they come from can vary in appearance, though they can maintain a certain specific identity within them.

This is a Thunder Egg that is polished on 1 side and the apx weight is 1 LB 15 3/8 oz (889 grams); the size is apx: 6 1/4" x 4" x 2 1/2".

TERMS: The word “Natural” is used in listings to describe that a stone has not been polished in any way. IF this stone has been cut then you would see the saw marks on the stone because they have not been polished off. These stones would be considered “Natural / Un-Polished”. The word “Polished” is used to describe stones that have been polished to remove the saw marks from a cut on the stone. There are varying stages in the polishing process that brings out a higher luster / shine on the finished product. The term is used only to describe that the stone has undergone a polishing process and I am not defining the level of shine that the stone has (each stone will very). Stones / Agates / Petrified Wood / etc that is cut and the saw marks removed by the polishing process will be considered “Polished”.
