Their name alone indicates the vibe: 70s tribal rock a la the famed ol' Fillmore and its love for rootsy boogie. You remember Stoneground, the Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, Fraternity of Man, the Fugs, that sort of thing, and these guys, praise be to the ghost of Graham, just can't let go of it. The Mojo Gurus embody the period completely yet aren't holdovers from Haight-Ashbury but rather a quartet of young cats vibed into the 60s/70s San Fran milieu via the Stones, Faces, Status Quo, and the rest of those boisterous damn Brits.

Their last release was captured live by Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, NY Dolls, etc.), and Let's Get Lit returns them to the studio, where the lads had a blast cooking up high-kickin', gin bottle, bongloading rock and roll. The Gurus reel in the Summer of Love's hedonism…albeit by way of a biker bar and ten raucous free concerts at the Wicker Man festival. The sound is spacious but populated, carrying a half dozen sessioneers, of whom Howard Helm and his keyboards stand out in honky tonk splendor. Better of the Bottle is a great center-of-the-jug number, an anthem to drunkenness and faced living, instruments all over the place while kinfolk from hither and yon join in on the lyrics.

This is the latest of several Mojo Gurus releases since their formation in '99, and I hope to hell Ronnie Wood or Ian McLagan lays an ear to it, 'cause these smirky rebel bastards are right up their alley. And would to Jesus that Tucky Buzzard and the later Black Oak Arkansas could've been this inebriatedly righteous! The Mojos are tipsy, steamin', bluesy, rockin' 'n rollin' jamskickers from the word Go!. Don't toss this on when yer wanting some peace and quiet, 'cause Let's Get Lit will have you guzzlin' bourbon, banging on the walls, and shouting "Hallelujah!" in the middle of the night…and the neighbors, listening to Barry Manilow on Sears cassette players, will frown mightily. And you certainly revere the homeowners' association, doncha?
