This item is an antique Japanese Satsuma Mini Teapot.

This mini teapot displays beautifully detailed cherry blossoms in pinks, reds and gold. It has a bamboo wrapped swinging arched wire handle mounted in gold edged ears. There are three conical feet on the base. The bottom is marked with the artist or studio's seal, 'RPC KYOTO' in gold lettering. The body is saucer shaped; short and wide and rimmed with gold holding a small gold trimmed spout. The lid is gold rimmed with a gold tipped nub for lifting.

The dainty pot stands just 2 1/4" high to the top of the lid (not including the handle) and 3 1/4" wide to the tip of the spout.

The delicate bamboo on the handle is in excellent shape. The gold trim on the pot has dulled with age, but for something well north of 100 years in age, this pot is clean and in remarkably good shape. It doesn't look like it ever brewed tea; it has always just sat there looking pretty.

There is one very small dent along the edge of the teapot opening. It looks like it could have been done at the factory as the spot was glazed as is. This spot can only be seen with the lid removed and you have to do some serious peekin' to see it.

Satsuma ware has typically been an export product designed in the mid 19th century catering specifically to the western export market. The Japanese themselves had very little interest in this type of ware.

From around 1890 to the 1920's (the Meiji period), at least 20 large studios were producing the low quality ware destined for European and American markets. At the same time, several artists were producing similar wares of the highest quality. Most high quality export Satsuma is easily recognized by its finely crackled glaze and the fact that its yellowish earthenware body doesn't "ring" when tapped.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is one of those exquisite Satsuma teapots of the highest quality. This delicate teapot clearly shows the excellent pottery craftsmanship of another era, a true diamond in the rough.

This neat little teapot would compliment any collection of fine china or collectables. Although small in stature, it holds its own with fine workmanship and beauty.
