Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This is an old adage that has been the basis for many a story. It is the primary plot device behind John Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings classic. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, the first of the three movie installments, which have already been filmed, tries to stay true to the mystical world present in the book. Such places are Rivendell and Lorien, which are the strongholds of Good; in contrast Mordor is an abode of Evil. The readers as well as the characters can choose in what to believe, what to worship. It is wrong to say that only fools have gathered under the banner of Evil. The enemy is sly and artful, and only unity, sincerity and kindness can subdue it.

·         Darkness pervades Middle-earth where man, beast and nature are called to an adventure full of peril and hope. Here is how Elijah Wood explains the film's dominant theme: No matter how bad things are, no matter how much evil there is in this world, there is always some good worth fighting for, worth standing up for.

·         Frodo is called to risk his life through great peril to save others. The story chronicles how Frodo, being a reluctant hero, travels through mysterious and dangerous lands of breathtaking beauty, and fights terrific monsters in the context of awesome towers and citadels, to achieve his goal. Like us, does not appear to be up to the task. He does not have any obvious talent suited for war. But he is chosen, as we are. We are all necessary for The Universe grand plan to be fulfilled; and even the most unlikely and disgusting Gollum-like beast in our life is necessary. And when Frodo asks, "What can a little hobbit do?" — Isaiah answers, "A little child will lead them"

   Hard life in Middle-earth during the War of the Ring reflects hard life in reality. The war mixed all the cards and those who fought under Wight banners yesterday gave in to the generous promises of Evil. And vice verse. Vile and bitter enemies become allies, as it happens with Gollum. While battles take place in Gondor and Rohan, two little hobbits make their way to Orodruin. The reader has to believe that countless armies do not always decide the outcome of the battle, and that one can conquer alone.

·       The struggle with different personifications of Evil is eternal too. The War of the Ring is a small part of this struggle. Some critics compare Sauron with Hitler and Mordor with Nazi Germany. Besides, a part of the epic was written during WWII. But Evil has always been and will remain in Middle-earth as well as in real life. The question is - who will be its new followers? What will you do with your ring?

·         Tolkien's characters are called to play roles in a story that is much greater and more important than they are aware. Just as we are not aware of all that has happened before us, so Gandalf, at the end of The Hobbit, says to Bilbo, "You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit?”You are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!" 

·         The Fellowship of the Ring is constituted of different characters with different gifts suited for battling evil — the diversity keeps them united. This is like the diversity of gifts and talents given to the different members of our community — so that we might be dependent on each other.

·         There is a lot of humor in the film, which shows that nothing in life is worth taking too seriously.

And this is how it ends. In The Return of the King, the filmmakers tell a fairly simple story: how the two Hobbits, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) finally return the powerful ring to the fires of Mount Doom.
