Three hand carved Stingray / Manta Ray sculptures in mahogany, tulip and elm wood mounted on a piece of oak driftwood using dowels. The base is designed to depict a seamount or coral reef. The Rays are oiled to give a superb finish and to bring out the natural colour of the wood.

The beautiful sea life sculpture created by Roy Gollop is one of a kind, individually crafted entirely by hand, measuring 48cm in length, 14cm in height and 26cm depth including base (approximately).

The carving would sit perfectly in a coastal or nautical inspired interior and would make a fine centrepiece or a perfect Christmas gift for a friend of loved one.

About the creator

Roy Gollop, from Lyme Bay Carvings, is a member of one of Lyme’s oldest seafaring families. He began his maritime career as an apprentice boatbuilder in 1946 before enlisting in the Royal Marines, where he was responsible for landing craft operations before becoming senior instructor of seamanship. He returned to Lyme Regis and managed the family fishing business for several years until he ‘finally reopened the toolbox’ to build clinker dinghies and working boats for local people.

Now in his 80s, Roy has turned his many creative talents into producing desirable wooden carvings,  sculptures and other craft. He is also a visiting instructor and mentor at the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy and the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall, where he passes on his extensive skills and knowledge to a new generation, preserving the art of traditional boat building for generations to come.
