Vintage Isabel CANOVAS Lady w Turban & Fan ~ French Stick Pin Brooch ~ Gold Tone From famed French designer Isabel Canovas, this stick pin / brooch is striking and so intriguing. Substantial and well-made, in rich and shiny gold-tone metal, it depicts a turbaned lady's head, face half hidden demurely behind a fan. The pleats in the fan echo those in the turban and the texturing and geometric lines add interest and drama, creating shadows with movement in the play of light, making it even more eye catching. Mysterious and enigmatic, with eyes closed, who is this woman behind the fan? Perhaps she is a flapper from the Art Deco era, since ladies of that period often wore turbans. And in Victorian times, when turbans were also worn, fans were favored accessories and used more for communicating with one's lover than cooling one's person. Opening, closing, tapping and fluttering them with deft flicks of her wrist, a lady could express a great deal by what she did with her fan. Or perhaps this piece was created to go with a specific fashion line, with which it would have been shown.
Jewelry designers who were also clothing designers often made the most interesting costume jewelry: both stylish and collectible. This piece clearly shows why Canovas has been such a success. Simply elegant and elegantly simple, it will go with everything, bringing a touch of haute couture to every outfit, from jeans to a business suit to an evening wrap.
The pin is signed "Isabel Canovas" on the back. Canovas was born in 1945 and was a designer at several of the major fashion houses before opening her own shops, first in Paris (1982), then on Madison Avenue in New York (1985) and Madrid (1988). Sadly she closed her shops and ended her design career in 1992. Canovas' designs were produced in limited quantities, have held their value and can be hard to find. Produced in the short, 10 year period between 1982 and 1992, this type of pin was made in several different designs and this exotic one is an outstanding example. I note one like it sold on TheRealReal website (for $275) and there are a pair of matching earrings currently available (for $237).
Sculptural and 3-D, the pin has a keeper and measures about 3-7/8" overall length by 1-7/8" wide by just under 1/2" deep. It is in Excellent vintage condition with nothing more than expected surface dirt and light scratches. The gold-tone metal has a lovely rich patina and the piece is a Show Stopper!
