BEAUTIFUL Stanley No. 143 Plow Plane - GUARANTEED RIGHT!

GUARANTEED RIGHT & COMPLETE!!  The No. 143 Bull Nose Plow Plane is the least well documented and most misunderstood of all of Stanley's Plough Planes.  And some of what has been written about the 143 is just plain wrong.  Here are the facts.  The 141 and 143 were introduced in 1887.  They were bull nose versions of the 41 and 43 which had been on the market since 1871.  The 1's had a filletster bed.  The 3's did not.  The 43 had no provision for a filletster bed.  NOT SO THE 143.  From 1887 to 1928, it differed from the 141 only in that no filletster was provided.  Otherwise, all No. 143's made prior to 1929 are identical to 141's, including the two slotted holes in the skate.  Catalog illustrations confirm this, as do two examples from my collection new in their picture label boxes.  The final photo is of the illustration from one of those No. 143 box labels.  Stanley discontinued the 141 in 1918 and everything changed in 1929 when the 143 was  redesigned to add a rosewood plate to the fence and discontinue the keyholes in the skate.  They continued to offer the 143 until 1943.

This example has most of the characteristics of a "Type 8" dating it to the period 1888-1892.  In addition to STANLEY cast in the center of the fence, it is marked on the skate "Stanley Rule & Level Co. New Britain. Conn.  Pat. May 18, 1886" which is the patent for the convertible bullnose design.

Save for the typically weak nickel plating, it rates quite good with no consequential damage of any sort, including rusting, pitting, chipping or significant dinging in the metal or rosewood.  The plating is hard to rate as it is more an issue of weakness in most areas than downright loss.  This is quite typical of planes in this series.  Please look carefully at the photos and make your own call.  It is a strikingly beautiful plane and speaks well for itself.

While the plane itself is Guaranteed to be 100% Complete and Right including the almost always missing interchangeable bull nose front piece, it comes with but one (1/2") blade.  And the blade is guaranteed correct for the plane (the 141/143 blades are similar to but much thinner than the 41/43 blades - and a lot harder to find).  A Scarce and BEAUTIFUL Plane.  What tool collecting is all about!  Don't get sniped!!
