• This charming object' de Plateros Mexico Folk Art was purchased from the artisan himself at a showing at holiday festival (FIESTA) near the old Mercado in San Antonio in 1985 or 86. This was the very beginning of the popularity of this rustic, playful, religious art form. Inexpensive materials, rough wood, pyrography, easily attainable paper and plastic items, a small colored nightlight bulb, an electrical cord and, voilà! . . . An eye catching religious shrine that even the non-religious can feel a spiritual connection. The primary (front window) Figure in the Shrine is the VIRGEN DE SAN JUAN de los Lagos in her splendor, even if it is in plastic! In the background you can see Saint George! In the right side window you see Our lady of Guadeloupe, the other window, there's Saint Joseph to complete the Holy Family. The roof, sides and front are of rough, soft wood, the back and bottom are particle board. Simple designs are burned into the front, sides and roof, using a procedure called "pyrography," a form of artistic wood burning. I've made photos of the Shrine with the red light bulb both ON and OFF. (It's evident which are which.) Plateros is in the State of Zacatecas and is a center of Mexican  folk art of all types. These rustic religious folk art pieces are campy and collectable! CONDITION: looks like it did 30 years ago! Original bulb. Hardly ever plugged in, cord in good condition. The windows are made of something like plexiglas, so basically unbreakable. MEASUREMENTS: 5 1/2" wide, 7 1/2" tall, 3 1/4" deep (front to back).  The ornate figure of the Infant including the white roses, is 3 3/4".  The cord is approx 28" long including the plug. I love this little shrine but like everything that fills my packed house and full Texas barns, most of it has to go! My grown children have made it clear they're not interested in my years of collecting. It's your gain. I pack  carefully. My home is 100% smoke free. A CAMPY, PRIMITIVE, BUT WELL MADE, RUSTIC PLATEROS MEXICO FOLK ART SHRINE!
