Thai Temple Rubbing

Thai Temple Rubbing
Black chalk/ink on heavy hand made paper from the Northern City of Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Measuring approximately 12” x 24”

I recently finished a trip around S.E. Asia and found a few of these temple rubbings at a small market just outside the Bangkok city limits.  I love these and several of my friends have asked me to bring them some in the past.   So, I thought I'd grab these and offer them to anyone else who appreciates this type of art.  I have since, started selling these for much more on a Web site at ThaiTempleRubbings.com.

Ancient Thai temple walls were often covered in stone relief cravings of scenes from the Thai epic The Story of Ramakien.  Pilgrims would rub charcoal or other material over heavy rice paper on these  walls to make a memento of their journey.  These Temple Rubbings were later made by the temple monks as souvenirs and sold to foreign tourists.  They became very popular allowing Thai Monks to make money.  However, many  temple walls were eventually damaged from being rubbed too much.
